How to Spot a Ghost Job Listing

A ghost job is a listing that is posted but not actually being filled. Sometimes it's an evergreen pipeline ad, sometimes it's a role that quietly closed, sometimes it's a company signaling growth it isn't funding. Either way, your application goes nowhere.

Why ghost jobs exist

Companies keep listings up to build talent pipelines, to look like they're growing, to benchmark salary expectations, or simply because nobody remembered to take the posting down after a hiring freeze. None of those reasons are visible from the outside, which is why the pattern is so frustrating.

Warning signs

A single flag isn't proof. Two or three together usually is.

  • The posting has been live for more than 90 days with no edits.
  • The description is generic and lists no team, product, or manager.
  • The same role is reposted every few weeks with an identical description.
  • The salary range is enormously wide, or absent in a jurisdiction that requires it.
  • The apply link goes to a generic form rather than the company's ATS.
  • The company announced layoffs or a hiring pause after the posting date.

How to verify in five minutes

Open the company's own careers page and search for the exact title. If it isn't there, the listing you found is a stale copy. If it is there, check the requisition ID and posting date. Then look for a recruiter or hiring manager for that team and confirm the search is active — a short, polite message often gets a straight answer.

Use a board that removes dead roles

The structural fix is to search on a board that pulls from company feeds and drops listings when the source removes them. GrowthAI re-syncs every board daily and only shows roles that still exist upstream, which is why our listings link straight to the employer's own application page.
